PLEASE  request a transcript from the Registrar's office at least one week in advance - or request multiple at once.
Also, if the instructions require you to submit the scholarship to the Counselor's Office - it must be in a sealed envelope
and you must provide your envelope

Please check back regularly, as the companies and individuals providing the scholarships may change something about the scholarship and not tell us.  We will do everything possible to keep this up to date, but remember, things could change.  If you happen to have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me, Mrs. Darrough-Hayden at 620-356-1380 or kdarrough-hayden@usd214.org.

P. E.O. STAR Scholarship - $2,500 - open to UHS Senior girls that meet the eligibility requirements - (this scholarship is by the nomination of their teacher - the nominated students will be contacted by the counselor's office to fill out an application.)

Eligibility:

A woman is eligible to be recommended for the P.E.O. Scholarship provided she:

  • Exhibits excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service, and potential for future success

  • Has a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0

  • Is in the final academic year (senior year) of her secondary education and is 20 years of age or under at the end of the calendar year.

  • Is a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States or Canada

  • Plans to attend an accredited post-secondary educational institution in the United States or Canada, full-or part-time in the fall of the academic year following high school graduation

    • Is recommended by and receives the vote of a P.E.O. chapter.

Kansas Buffalo Association (KBA) Scholarship - $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior or first-year college freshman who is involved in raising bison and/or is planning to pursue a career in an agriculturally related field.

2024 State Masonic Public School Essay Contest for Juniors and Seniors. Potential for $12,000 in scholarships. Contact the counselor for more information. Due to your counselor on this date!    

Topic this year:  The 170 Masonic Lodges throughout Kansas provide philanthropic support within their communities.  In 2023, Kansas Masonic Lodges collectively donated more than $300,000 to worthy charitable organizations for the betterment of their communities. Select a charitable organization within your community that does excellent work and explain why you believe this organization warrants financial consideration and support. Note:  Should your essay be one of the top eight chosen this year, an award of $1,000 will be given to your chosen charitable organization by the local Masonic Lodge.

  • Be a current member of the International Order of Rainbow Girls for at least two years
  • Be a current member of Job’s Daughter International for at least two years
  • Have an acceptance letter from the university/college or a copy of a current college transcript
  • Be enrolled in 12 credit hours per semester
  • Demonstrate a financial need

  • Award amounts depend on the number of applicants.

  • Applications will be accepted from December 1 to February 15.

  • You MUST reapply each year to be eligible for a scholarship.

  • CRITERIA FOR ALL CYNTHIA RUTH RUSSELL SCHOLARSHIPS

    • Be a Kansas resident

    • Be living with a disability (as defined by the World Health Organization)

    • Have an acceptance letter from the university/college or a copy of a current college transcript

    • Be enrolled in 12 credit hours per semester

    • Demonstrate a financial need

    • Be attending an identified/eligible four-year Kansas university OR a two-year Kansas technical/community college (as defined in the scholarship application)

Scholarship Specifics: 

  • Must be a graduating Senior of Ulysses High School

  • A typed application is preferred but not required.  Organization and neatness will be taken into consideration when choosing a recipient.  Proofreading is advised.

  • Amount Varies. (minimum $200 for Freshman year)

RUDD Foundation 2024 Scholarship - a competitive, 4-year award designed to pay any remaining costs associated with tuition and fees, books and supplies, and room and board after accounting for all other grants, scholarships, and financial awards.

  • US Citizen (or Permanent Resident) and a resident of Kansas that is eligible for in-state tuition

  • Graduating high school in 2024

  • Must have taken the ACT or SAT and submit the score to apply

  • Must have a cumulative unweighted high school GPA of 3.0 or above

  • Have filled out the FAFSA application and qualifies for a Pell Grant

  • Attend Wichita State, Fort Hays State, Kansas State, or Emporia State Universities for the fall of 2024 as a full-time student.

Pioneer Communications is excited about an Education Sponsorship Program at NCK Tech in Hays, Kansas for those interested in a career in the telecommunications industry. This will cover tuition, books, and housing for FREE!  Pioneer Communications is committed to covering the cost of the student’s required tuition and books (and tools, if applicable) and providing an internship and employment opportunities for the student upon completion of the program 24-month program. Kansas Association of Director of Plant Facilities – Students must be residents of Kansas graduate from a Kansas High School and plan to attend a Kansas college or technical school. Only children whose parent or legal guardian is actively employed in a K-12 or secondary education institution and engaged in buildings and grounds, food service or transportation positions shall be eligible for these scholarships.

Great Plains Association for College Admission Counseling (GPACAC) Scholarship

Six scholarships of $1000 are awarded each year. Students must meet all the following scholarship requirements listed below:

  • Be a member of the Class of 2023

  • Attend high school/home school in Nebraska, Kansas, or Oklahoma

  • Have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)

  • Complete the application form, including the essay on the topic below

American Implement - Student Service Technician Scholarship 

The American Implement Ag TECH Sponsorship Program is for students who desire to go into the Agriculture Industry and become certified John Deere Service Technicians. Upon completion of the program, students receive an associate's degree, tuition paid by American Implement, and the security of having a guaranteed career straight out of college. These are full-ride scholarships covering tuition/fees, room, and board, totaling out to just over $32,000. This also includes a $17,000 Mac Tool toolbox and tools. Altogether, this scholarship is almost a $50,000 package.

Pheasant Heaven Charities Inc. Vocational Scholarship -  must be seniors at an area high school within fifty miles of Hugoton, KS. Scholarship funds will be awarded upon successful completion of the student’s first semester of full-time attendance at a vocational school. Recipients must take courses at the location of the vocational institution of their choice.

Pheasant Heaven Charities Inc. College Scholarship - must be seniors at an area high school within fifty miles of Hugoton, KS with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Funds will be awarded upon successful completion of the student’s first semester of college, with a minimum of 12 semester hours completed. Recipients must take courses at the location of the post-secondary institution of their choice.

Kansas Junior Golf Scholarship (Scholarship amount: $2,500 per year, renewable for 4 years)

The Kansas Junior Golf Scholarship is awarded each spring to five (5) Junior golfers who will attend an accredited college or university in Kansas.  The top-ranking applicant will be presented the Phil Miller Junior Golf Award, established in 2021, in honor of the Foundation's former Executive Director and his dedication to junior golf and the KJGS program.

KWGA Memorial Scholarship

The Kansas Women's Golf Association (KWGA) Memorial Scholarship is awarded to one (1) or more recipients each spring and is a one-time grant of $2,000.  The recipient may attend any accredited college or university, in Kansas or elsewhere.

The KWGA Memorial Scholarship was established on January 1, 2018, to commemorate and continue the Kansas Women's Golf Association Scholarship, which awarded college/university scholarships from 1991 through 2017.

Pioneer Communications Memorial Scholarships - Joseph B. Chilen & Earl B. Williams Memorial Scholarship to eligible 2024 graduating seniors.  The Scholarship will be awarded as 5 scholarships for $1,500 each to students across our service area.

Scholarships may be sent as a PDF via email to:  sheri.king@pioncomm.net.  

The scholarship may be mailed but must be postmarked by March 14.  The transcript required should be through the mid-term of the student's senior year.

  • Have unmet financial needs at the school they plan to attend
  • Requires 3 essays that demonstrate an understanding and depth of the field & themselves.

 Foundation of the Scholarship: Mrs. Cynthia Rodriguez-Mendoza was a dedicated educator for USD #214 and Kansas Children’s Service League Head Start for a combined 25+ years. One of her strongest beliefs was for people to pursue a secondary education in whichever form it may be, as she was firm in also believing that everyone deserves a chance to better themselves. Cynthia was a loved member of her community as a proud parent, supporting teacher, devout church member, volunteer, and so much more. In 2020 amid the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, she fell sick with the unfortunate disease that lead to her passing. So, it is, this scholarship foundation has been established by her family to provide students of all backgrounds the opportunity to provide some financial assistance in pursuing an education after high school.  

Scholarship Requirements: 

  • Must be a graduating UHS Senior of the Class of 2023 or enrolled college student of UHS.

  • Must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution and provide proof of enrollment OR intent/acceptance. (college, vocational/technical school, etc.)

  • Must be in good academic standing to graduate in the 2022-2023 academic year.

Katie Bug's Go the Distance Scholarship

This scholarship was established to give back to the community of Ulysses, Kansas. This community has supported Katie emotionally, financially, and spiritually over the past 3 years through her battles with unknown stomach issues. At birth, Katie was diagnosed with Trisomy  21, a form of Down syndrome, and has had many hurdles to overcome throughout her life such as heart defects, leukemia, and gastrointestinal issues. This scholarship wants to recognize others like Katie that have overcome obstacles through hard work, passion, and perseverance. This scholarship has been established for a Ulysses High School (or a derivative of such like UCLC) graduate that would like to further their education after high school. The scholarship is available to students that plan on attending a college, vocational, or technical school.  

Conditions of the Scholarship

Kansas Comprehensive Grant

The Kansas Comprehensive Grant is available to needy Kansas residents enrolled full-time at eighteen private colleges and universities located in Kansas, six state universities, and Washburn University. This grant is funded by the state of Kansas. The Kansas Legislature provides limited assistance to financially needy students. To be considered you must complete and submit the FAFSA, listing one or more eligible colleges in the FAFSA. The funding level allows about 1 in 3 eligible students to be assisted with award amounts ranging from $200 - $3,500 at private institutions and $100 - $1,500 at public institutions. This grant is based on financial needs.

Beef Empire Days, Inc. Scholarship

Beef Empire Days, Inc. will be awarding five to seven graduating high school seniors from the Beef Empire trade area (Western Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma Panhandle areas) with a $500 freshman scholarship.

Eligible Applicants: 

  1. Any student who has or will be graduating from a high school in Grant County during the year of application and enrolled in undergraduate studies for the following semester.

  3. 2nd to be considered will be if you have experienced the loss of a sibling.

$500 Jim Johnson Scholarship

High Plains Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) & the National Weather Association (NWA) established this scholarship in 2007 for those pursuing a career in one of the physical sciences (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and Earth Science including geology, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography, and soil science).  The scholarship is also open to those going into the teaching profession in the physical sciences.  The student must be attending a school in the forecast and warning area of one of the following National Weather Service Offices; Dodge City and Goodland, Kansas, and North Platte and Hastings, Nebraska.

Jim Johnson was one of the instrumental people who helped start the High Plains Chapter of the AMS in 1996.  His weather career spanned several decades, first with the U.S. Air Force and then with the NWS.  He retired as an NWS Lead Forecaster from the Dodge City, Kansas office in September 2006. Unfortunately, Mr. Johnson passed away in 2022.

Scholarship requirements - essay, provide acceptance to a college with a physical science major, and this is non-renewable. 

  1. The applicant will provide proof of acceptance to a college with a physical science major.
  2. Applicant will write a one-page essay stating what they plan to do in the physical sciences once they receive their degree, and how it will contribute to their discipline.
  3. The format of the essay should be 12-point font, double-spaced.
  4. The application deadline is April 30, 2024.
  5. Scholarship will be awarded around June 1, 2024.
  6. Scholarship is non-renewable.

The Career Technical Workforce Grant is available to students enrolled in an eligible career technical education program operated by a designated Kansas educational institution that has been identified as offering a technical certificate or associate of applied science degree program in a high-cost, high-demand, or critical industry field. Designated Kansas educational institutions include technical colleges, community colleges, public four-year colleges that award associate of applied science degrees; and the Washburn Institute of Technology. Kansas Teacher Service Scholarship

The Kansas Teacher Service Scholarship is a merit-based service obligation scholarship program that provides financial assistance to both students pursuing bachelor's degree programs and currently licensed teachers pursuing an endorsement in hard-to-fill disciplines or master's degrees in hard-to-fill disciplines or either group planning to teach in an underserved geographic area. Recipients sign agreements to teach one year for each year of scholarship support in Kansas. Recipients are eligible to receive this scholarship for up to ten semesters, which includes both undergraduate and graduate work.  

Applicants must be: an established resident of the State of Kansas and attending a Kansas post secondary institution; AND a) Enrolled in a program leading to licensure as a teacher in an identified hard-to-fill discipline* or underserved geographic area ** OR b) Currently licensed as a teacher and enrolled in a course of instruction leading to endorsement in one of the hard-to-fill disciplines* or teach in one of the underserved geographic areas** in Kansas; OR c) Currently licensed teachers enrolled in a program leading to a master’s degree in an identified discipline* or underserved area** (This scholarship is not a resource for Counseling, Administration or Reading/Library Specialist degrees); AND d) Complete the FAFSA and the State of Kansas Student Aid Application.

*Identified hard-to-fill disciplines for 2022-2023 are Elementary Education, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Special Education.

**Underserved Geographic Areas are USD 501 Topeka; USD 500 Kansas City, KS; USD 259 Wichita, and State Board of Education Area 5 (which includes all of the western 1/3 of the State of Kansas).
